Costa Blanca Property: Information about Gran Alacant and Santa Pola

If you’re thinking of buying a property on the Costa Blanca and you want to be close to the airport and the beach, then you could do a lot worse than take a look at Santa Pola and Gran Alacant. If you’re not familiar with the Costa Blanca then click here for more info.

In this short article I’m going to you some information about both places to give you an idea of what to expect before you go there. The reason I am including both Santa Pola and Gran Alacant in the same post is that they are linked together. I know that sounds a little odd so let me explain.

Both places are in the province of Alicante, just south of Alicante city, which is the capitol of the province. Gran Alacant is less than10 minutes’ and Santa Pola, under 15 minutes’ drive from the airport and if you so wish there is also a Bus Service connecting the two towns.

Now using the term town to describe Gran Alacant is me using a little poetic licence because it is in fact a large residential development which over the past twenty years has extended to such an extent that you could call it a town.

It’s been twenty years since I sold my first property in Gran Alacant and I liked it then and I still like it today all these years on. In my opinion it has a lot going for it, due to the terrain, even though there are quite a few properties the place still has an open feel. It also boasts its own natural reserve area and a long sandy Beach. If you’d like some tourist information about Gran Alacant then click here.

Back in 2002 I actually lived in Gran Alacant for about a year down in the Mediterraneo Development which was built by Costa Urbana who have in the meantime sadly stopped trading which is a shame because their properties were good quality. Also between 2005 until 2007 I worked for a promoter in Gran Alacant so I got to know the area pretty well.

The fact that it has its own beach an endless variety of Bars, Restaurants, Shops Supermarkets and a commercial centre has turned Gran Alacant from a housing estate into a town in its own right and it is possible to cover your daily needs without leaving it. If you’re thinking of buying a holiday home, or maybe a rental property as an investment, then Gran Alacant is in a perfect location.

Being so close to the airport is obviously an advantage but on top of this, the city of Alicante is only a short drive and there you will find all of the amenities and opportunities a city of more than 300,000 people has to offer. With the city and the airport so close by if you’re based in Gran Alacant you can connect to the rest of the country by either road, rail or air in less than 30 minutes and of course, of you can connect with the rest of Spain so easily there is nothing preventing you doing the same with the rest of the world.

Leaving Gran Alacant behind us and travelling a few minutes further south along the N332 coast road we come to the town of Santa Pola. This is without a doubt one of my favourite towns on the Coast. From 2001 up to 2004 I worked for Euroland Properties whose office was on the opposite the aquarium and the town hall. Earlier you may remember that I said that both Gran Alacant and santa pola were somehow linked and the reason I said this was because, years ago because Gran Alacant wasn’t as well developed as it is today it was necessary to show Santa Pola before moving on to Gran Alacant so people knew they had amenities close at hand.

For many years Santa Pola was a popular place with people from Elche to have a holiday home and during the summer months it was common practice among Spanish people for the family to move from their home in Elche to their apartment by the sea in Santa Pola to spend the summer there. This always makes me smile when I consider that the two towns are less than 30 minutes apart.

Santa Pola has its own small fishing fleet and if you’re into fresh fish then the market on the quay is a perfect place to pick up some of the fresh catch. Over the years I ate in many of the restaurants in the town and I must say that I was very rarely disappointed with the quality. This can also be said of the bars and cafés in and around the centre and close to the beach and talking of beaches there are kilometres of sand and surf plus a marina to enjoy.

As far as amenities go Santa Pola like Gran Alacant has a market once a week there is also a Mercadona and a Carrefour Express. In the centre of town is the Castle and a great choice of bars restaurants and boutiques. With a population of 30.000 Santa Pola is a lively little coastal town with all of the facilities and amenities necessary for full time living. Even though there is a mix of nationalities it is unlike Gran Alacant predominantly Spanish. If you’d like more information about Santa Pola then click here.
